A certain Big City Law Firm (that shall remain nameless) hosted an LLM Reception recently, which I had the good fortune to be invited too. I thought it would be a good opportunity to find out more about the firm, what they offer in particular to LLM students and see whether they were the right "fit" for me.
What I got instead was a vast room full of people I don't know (overwhelmingly LLM students as opposed to this firm's employees) and an expectation that we should just "mingle" until such time as we got bored and left. For me, it took 45 minutes before I was out the door, wondering what the purpose of the event actually was.
For those playing the home game, a new word has been added to my dictionary of impossible words:
- Hegemony (as in "hegemonic power", i.e. the United States) - dominant or superpower are perfectly serviceable plain English words, there's no need to get poncy.
