It took three trains to pass today before I could finally board.
I call the whole process “survival of the fittest”, since only those who can push their way through using their elbows are able to get into the carriages as soon as they emerge into the abyss that is the platform. Being a mere 5 ft 2, my size has proved somewhat of an advantage - I can now burrow my way through the masses like a mole, and then slink on without anyone even noticing.
I am a second year Law student living in Essex, but every day, I have to endure an hour’s commute. Despite my grumbles, I have gotten used to the whole thing, although now I am much more diligent as to my choice of footwear (having last year lost a shoe, which is probably now a crumpled electrical mess). The area (without giving too much away), is typically Londonesque and quaint, with an array of small bars and expensive restaurants. It’s always been a dream of mine to work here … I yearn to be the British Ally McBeal, strutting down the streets in a pair of Blahniks with a travelling latte in one hand and a leather briefcase bursting with case notes in the other. A career in the law is certainly one of glamour and prestige, but I have always regarded it as something more.
The clients, the exciting cases – everything about the profession screams excitement, and I am eager to taste it more than anything.
I thought today would be a particularly good starting point, seeing as it’s the first day of the second term. I get another piece of coursework soon which I am dreading, since the first piece eroded away at my social life like no other. I secured a high 2:1 on the piece, although I cannot help but wonder what it would feel like to achieve a first. Being so very elusive, “The First” is a grade the law student only ever dreams about. It marks a degree of excellence so great, that only those who are able to write like a lawyer-esque Charles Dickens are able to achieve it.
Started yet another vacation scheme application in the form of a cover letter today - oh boy are they tiresome. I’ve lost count of the number of applications I’ve done, I just hope one of them gives me a chance.
Toodles for now!
